Der schönste und abwechslungsreichste Wanderfluss in Mitteleuropa. Die Donau bricht viele Male durch Gebirgszüge, dazwischen erstrecken sich immer wieder Ebenen. Im Oberlauf inzwischen leider viele Schleusen. Ab Beginn der Grossschifffahrtsstrasse in Kehlheim haben die Schleuesen wieder größere Abstände. Starke Strömung wechselt mit Rückstaus vor den Staumauern. Hinter Wien nur noch 2 Schleusen, bzw. Umtragen dann frei fliessend bis zum Eisernen Tor an der rumänischen Grenze.
In den Gebirgsdurchbrüche vor Budapest und hinter Belgrad muss man mit heftigen Fallwinden rechnen. Gedeckte Boote sind dann unbedingt nötig.
Anlegen am Grenzponton schwierig da starke Aufwärtsströmung. Stand 2004 wollten die Österreicher wirklich die Ausweise sehen, nicht einfach durchfahren!
Boothaus am rechten Ufer, steile Treppen, Schwimmsteg im Frühjahr nicht vorhanden.
