Das Barßeler Tief beginnt an der Mündung der Soeste (nach links) und ist die Weiterführung des Nordloher Tiefs. Seine Gesamtlänge beträgt etwa 3,5 Kilometer. Die Landzunge zwischen Soeste und Nordloher Tief am Beginn des Barßeler Tiefs wird auch als "Schnappburg" bezeichnet. Hier soll früher eine Zollstelle gewesen sein für alle Schiffe, die zum Ammerland und nach Barßel flussaufwärts fuhren.
