Die Billwerder Bucht ist ein Altwasser der Norderelbe. Früher ging hier der Hauptstrom durch. Am oberen Ende fällt sie mehr und mehr trocken. Zwischen dem Holzhafen und dem Kraftwerk Tiefstack steht die Bucht unter Naturschutz. Deshalb sollte man auch nur entlang des nördlichen Ufers und der betonnten Fahrrinne rudern, von Mitte März bis Mitte September muß man das sogar, da die anderen Bereiche der Bucht dann wegen der Brutsaison nicht befahren werden dürfen.
